The Real Thing

Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing is about the meaning of fidelity, fidelity to a spouse, a lover, one’s work, one’s self. If you have never read the play or seen a production, I suppose this is as good a time as any to take it in. The performances are quite good, for the most part, though at times horribly angst-ridden and director Allan Barton’s pacing leaves much to be desired.

If you have not read the play, don’t let the first scene make you run for the exit and demand your money back. It will get better. If you have read the play, you know what you’re in for. Also, if you haven’t read the play, you may want to in order to catch the bits of dialogue drowned out by an oddly intrusive sound design.

Be prepared for a long evening, due to the late start and overlong transitions as much as the length of the script. And dress warmly.
