Amick Byram at Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s
On June 6th 2010, Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s celebrated its fourth year. The artist asked to perform that evening was the Broadway star and two-time Grammy nominee. Amick Byram. Amick appeared in Phantom of The Opera, Les Miserables, Sunset Boulevard (with Glen Close). Amick is also a busy singer for The Simpsons (sang for over 100 episodes), and has released his first CD Encounter. He is also active in Christian music; I met him playing Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. He is a very talented and amiable performer.
Amick opened Sterling’s four years ago and back by demand was here to help celebrate the next four years. He opened with that Frank Sinatra Standard “Come Fly With Me”. This song acted as an introduction to a selection of show tunes associated with his career, and some he wanted to sing. Of course he sang a song from Sunset Boulevard (“Sunset Boulevard”) and from Phantom of the Opera (“Music of the Night”). His own choices included ‘High Flying Adored” from Evita, “If I Loved You” from Oklahoma, and a very effective “This is the Moment” from Jekyll and Hyde. Not surprisingly for this multi-talented artist he sang a lovely song he had composed called “Make A Way”. One very interesting addition was a clip from the animated King of Egypt, with music by Stephen Schwartz, in which he played Moses. He played a clip in which the character sang “All I Ever Wanted” and sang live. Amick is a very devout man so it was appropriate that he include spiritual and inspirational songs on the program. Amick performed on June 6th at Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s. Let us hope he returns sooner than four more years.
