First, let me say that Rogue Machine is one of the most exciting and worthwhile new theatre companies upon which we should keep our eyes in this, our very talented theatre community. Before I even review this excellent production, Half of Plenty, however, I cannot resist talking about their late night show, Bingo With The Indians by New York hot shot, Adam Rapp. Although I am not reviewing Bingo, (having already closed by the time of this review) let it be known that this show is a superb and splendidly griping tale filled with black humor, provoking thought, and unnerving portraitures. It cannot be revived soon enough.
Half of Plenty is a tamer, but worthy piece about the moral and spiritual disintegration of a young American couple living in a suburban (perhaps gated) neighborhood somewhere in America. The wife tries to balance caretaking and career at home while her husband battles difficulties at work, and ultimately is seduced by Nazi like neighborhood watch folks intent on rooting out differences, whether racial or behavioral. Although interesting and provocative, I found the ending unsatisfying. We were not prepared to see the wife, struggling with a fantasized love affair, stand up to her husband, intent on holding true to her principles by rejecting harsh actions which would bring financial gain.
The performances were all very good. Robert Mandan couldn’t help but somewhat steal the show as he succeeded in portraying the old man as not too cutely adorable, nor too obnoxiously hard to take. Ron Bottitta was thrillingly unlikable. So was his wife, played by Betzy Zajko. John Pollono, as the husband, was totally believable. The most difficult role was that of the caretaker wife. Carolyn Palmer attempts a multi-sided characterization of a woman totally sincere and idealistic in her desire to support her husband and his aging father. Her situation becomes increasingly difficult as her values, even her love, is threatened by what appears to be circumstances beyond her control. An interesting and talented actress, I wish Ms Palmer might relax a bit more, and settle down, particularly in the beginning. We see her vulnerability automatically. The director, and/or the script, did not prepare her for the ending, which fell short as I have already stated.
I you have the chance to see Half of Plenty before it closes, it’s a good bet.
