The Colony Theatre in Burbank is presenting the West Coast premiere of Shooting Star, a romantic comedy by Steven Dietz.
Twenty-five years have passed since Elena (Michelle Duffy) and Reed (Kevin Symons) were college sweethearts. They were young and madly in love. They had many dreams while living together for two years, but their relationship ended badly. Suddenly, the two find themselves face to face in an airport waiting area. Due to a heavy snowstorm, all flights have been cancelled and there is a lot of time to reminisce. Twenty-five years? Has it really been that long? Has so much changed? Well, for one, Reed has become a more conventional individual, married with a daughter, a corporate executive on his way to a business meeting; she is still a flower child, unmarried, and has been through numerous affairs. At first they try to ignore seeing one another, but finally are compelled to make contact, and as time and conversation ensues, the question becomes, "Is it possible, that after all of these years, will they find each other again?" The play offers moments of sadness, but also times to laugh. The ending may not totally satisfy, but it seems the most logical under the circumstances.
Duffy and Symons present their characters in a most definitive way under the astute direction of David Rose. David Potts' airport waiting area is very realistic. Seeing the snow coming down behind the windows offers a "chilling" reality to the snowstorm outside.
