Having been a music major, I was in awe of this documentary by Lilian Franck and Robert Cibis, but more particularly of Stefan Knupfe, who is the "leading man" in the film.
Knupfe is Steinway and Sons" chief technician and Master Tuner in Vienna. But more than that, he is an aficionado of the art of music and a perfectionist at what he does. His unusual job calls for him to match world class instruments with world-famous pianists as well. The film is sub-titled Looking For the Perfect Sound and, from the film, I doubt that there is anyone who has more patience, more dedication and more strength of character to carry out his task than Knupfe who makes certain that he does just that.
Stefan Knupfe obviously loves his work He takes great pains when famous pianists such as Lang Lang, Alfred Brendel, or Pierre-Laurent Aimard prepare for a concert, first for each to choose the right instrument, then to make certain that it is tuned to perfection. It is obvious that Knupfe has the one talent necessary for his job, an ear for a perfect pitch as he does not use a measuring device to obtain the right tone. Watching him at his work can often make one feel his tension, but Knupfe never loses his cool and retains his warm and charming character no matter what problems pop up.
Pianomania (an ideal title) is a most interesting documentary that offers, not just an insight into what it takes to prepare for a concert, but also the chance to hear some performances by great musicians. 93 minutes. Opening at the Laemmle Royal Nov. 4.
