Pippin

As someone who marvels at the wonderful accomplishments of Artistic Director Ed Waterstreet of the Deaf West Theatre and his company and who has enjoyed many of their productions, I especially looked forward with great expectations of their collaboration with the Center Theatre Group in their production of Pippin.  Having been successful in their past collaboration of Big River, (which went from the Mark Taper Forum to a triumphant run on Broadway), made it even more enticing.
The original production produced by Bob Fosse opened on Broadway in 1972.  This production directed and choreographed by Jeff Calhoun is just as infectious with book by Roger O. Hirson , music and lyrics by Steven Schwartz (Wicked).  Cleverly staged with all players doing the entire show using sign language, their movements add to the flow of their roles.  Ty Taylor is wonderful as Leading Player (reminiscent of Ben Vereen).
Pippin is a fable about a young prince, son of the despot King Charlemagne who is looking for his “corner of the sky.”  Played by hearing-impaired actor Tyrone Giordano paired with Michael Arden as his voice, these two actors blend the role perfectly. Giordano is a fine actor and Arden’s singing voice is extremely appealing.  A sensational company of actors, singers and dancers, costumes and unusual scenic design, befitting the musical, by Tobin Ost, great lighting by Donald holder, sound design by Philip G. Allen, the live orchestra under the direction of Steven Landau and most impressive illusions by Jim Steinmeyer all add up to make Pippin a sheer musical delight.
