Oedipus The King, Mama!

If you are at all familiar with the comedy and spoofs that are the moral fiber of The Troubadour Theater Company, you would not be surprised to learn that the “The King,” in their latest production, reinvents Oedipus The King into Elvis Presley.  I have enjoyed all of their extremely clever parodies, but Oedipus The King, Mama!, playing at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank, has got to be the funniest yet.

In this production, it is difficult to mention any one person as a stand-out; this company consists of a troupe of top-notch performers, musicians, writers, singers, dancers, and all-time entertainers led by Artistic Director Matt Walker.  Their brand of comedy is hilarious from beginning to end, including their talent for ad-libbing which they do quite a lot of in this production.

Matt Walker heads the show as Oedipus, (also the Director) mimicking the posture and movements of Presley, in a costume ala Elvis.  James Snyder is sexy as the Young Elvis and Beth Kennedy is a riot as Queen Jocasta. Other cast members include Rick Batalla, Joseph Keane, James Michael Lambert, Andy Lopez, Jill Morrison, Breanna Pine, Jen Seifert, Mike Sulprizio, Danelle Thorpe, Lisa Valenzuela, and Kimberly Wood.  Adding to this fabulous production is the sujperb band led by drummer and Musical Director Eric Heinly, with Joel Morin (guitar), Tony Macias (bass), Micah Hulscher (keyboard), Kevin Stewart (alternate bass) and Kevin McCourt (alternate keyboard).  The marvelous costumes are by Sharon McGunigle, with lighting design by Jeremy Pivnick.  The excellent choreography is by Ameenah Kaplan.  The opening night crowd loved it, I loved it and I recommend it for an evening of fun and madness.  (Not for the young.)

Oedipus The King, Mama! will continue playing  Wed-Sat. at 8 p.m., Sundays at 4 p.m. through September 27.
